Guess who’s doing more than Facebook and Google to help businesses survive the COVID-19 Crisis…

Written by: Zach Johnson

It should come as no surprise that small business is very BIG business for the U.S. economy.

According to the US Small Business Administration (SBA), in 2018 there were over 30 million small businesses driving the US Economy – which adds up to about 99% of all businesses and 54% of all the sales in the country.

Small businesses, according to the same source, generated 44% of the United States economic activity from 1998 to 2014 – which is almost as much as the much as the giant Fortune 500 companies.

So, no wonder everyone is freaking out about the economically devastating impact the COVID-19 pandemic is going to have on small businesses in the coming year.

According to Goldman Sachs, 96% of them say the COVID-19 pandemic has affected their business. Unlike large corporations who have the cash reserves and a variety of sophisticate financial levers to pull to survive the crisis, most small businesses are essentially living “paycheck to paycheck” and countless numbers of them will close their doors before the end of April.

Your small business could be one of them.

The good news is that Facebook, Google and FunnelDash AdCapital have stepped up with programs to help struggling small businesses like yours keep themselves afloat by subsidizing ad spend on their platforms.

Funds from Facebook

Well aware of which side their bread is buttered on, Facebook has pledged $100 million in grants and ad credits for small businesses affected by COVID-19.  A full $40 million of that will go to small businesses in the 34 communities where Facebook operates.

If you’re one of the 10,000 businesses operating in one of them and have between 2 and 50 employees, been in business for more than 1 year and are facing challenges caused by COVID-19 you’re eligible for that assistance.

If you’re not in one of those communities you can still get help.

Facebook will be handing out an average $3,333 to an additional 20,000 small businesses – many of whom will be running ad campaigns for the first time.  While it’s not a ton cash, it is found money that you should spend wisely by doing these two things:

  1. Bring in the experts -- If you don’t have a freelancer or agency to buy your ads – get one immediately.  You’ll save money by skipping your own learning curve and start seeing ROI faster.
  2. Spend the money on qualified traffic.  Start slow and begin with a conversion-driven rather than a traffic-driven campaign that will make the most of the grant money by grabbing your best customers rather than just sweeping in a less qualified broader audience.

Grants from Google

Google is offering an even sweeter deal.

They recently announced that they will be handing out $340 million in ad credits to small and medium sized businesses as part of their $800 million COVID-19 stimulus package.

According to Google, small and medium-sized businesses are the backbone of their and the world’s communities.   They represent about 90 percent of all businesses and more than half of employment worldwide, according to the World Bank. COVID-19 has posed a particular challenge to these businesses, who are likely facing the possibility of shutting down plummeting  revenue even as they find ways to support and protect their employees. Through this ad credits program , Google says they  hope to alleviate some of the cost to stay in touch with their customers.

The catch is in order to get a piece of that funding you have to be a small business with an active Google Ads account over the past year. Credits will be provided to SMB advertisers that have been active advertisers since Jan 1, 2019 and comply with all Google Ads Terms and Conditions.

If you qualify, you can use the ad credit anywhere  across the Google Ads platform including Search, Display, and YouTube as well as all campaign types.  You can then look forward to seeing a credit notification appearing in your Google Ads account within the next few months that will be good until the end of 2020.  For more information check in with Google support.
